This article will guide you on how to set up a NETGEAR router to block websites and services using the Smart Wizard user interface.
To use the Block Sites feature:
- On the computer which is connected to the router, launch an internet browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc).
- Visit http://www.routerlogin.net. If http://www.routerlogin.net does not work, try the following:
- http://www.routerlogin.com
- http://192.168.1.1
- http://192.168.0.1
- http://10.0.0.1

- You are prompted to enter a username and password. Enter the following default login credentials:
Note: username and password are both case sensitive- Username: admin
- Password: password

- Under Content Filtering, select Block Sites.
- Under Keyword Blocking, select one of the following three options to specify when the blocking applies for keywords or domain names:
Never (The block is disabled)
Per Schedule (Blocking active on specified days or times)
Always (The block is always active) - Type the keyword or domain name in the Type keyword or domain name here field.
- Click Add Keyword.
- Click Apply.
Note: There is an option to have a single device bypass the block.
Select Allow trusted IP address to visit blocked sites and enter the IP address of the trusted device. This will allow the specified device full access to internet sites.
To use the Block Services feature:
Note: This router feature can be used to prevent access to certain websites based on the communication protocol (HTTP, FTP, HTTPS, RDP, and so on) that the site communicates on. The blocking can be applied to all users, or only to specified users, based on the IP addresses of their computers. All sites using the specified protocol will be blocked.
- Under Content Filtering, click Block Services.
- Under Services Blocking, select one of the following three options to specify when the blocking applies:
Never (The block is disabled)
Per Schedule (Blocking active on specified days or times)
Always (The block is always active) - Click Addto create a new entry in the Block Services Table.
- Specify what Service Type (FTP, RDP etc.) that you want to block.
If it is not listed in the drop-down list, choose User Defined and specify TCP/UDP and the port numbers(s) that you want to block.
By default, all users are prevented from using the blocked protocol. If only some users are to be blocked, specify the IP addresses of their computers in the Filter Services Forsection.
To create a content filtering schedule:
- Under Content Filtering, click Schedule.
- Select the Days to Block.
- Under Time of day to block, select All Day or enter specified times using the 24-hour clock.
- Select your Time Zone.
- Click Apply.
To view content filtering logs:

- Under Content Filtering, select Logs.
- Under Include in Log, select Attempted access to blocked sites and services.
- Click Apply.
Every attempt to access a blocked website will be listed in the logs under Current Time.
